OS X Update 10.4.7 fouls MacBookPro

Posted by joy

One of my dear intrepid readers has reported that the OS X 10.4.7 update rendered his 2.0Ghz MacBookPro inoperable. To the extent that the machine rebooted after update and hung at the gray screen…forever and ever and ever. After the hang, single user mode didn’t work and safe mode also failed. For reference, this is the same machine that inspired the Panic! At the MacBook Pro post.

The only way to get the MacBookPro operable again was to reinstall OS X. Not good at all.

  1. mike Says:

It’s my MBP that got borked from the 10.4.7(Intel) update.

    Here’s the lowdown:
Ran Software Update to get the 10.4.6->10.4.7 update installed. This ran fine until it went to reboot. The machine just locked up and I had to hard reset. Rebooting it left the grey Apple with the spinning gear below for about an hour and a half (usually takes 15 seconds to boot).

I tried Safe Mode and single user mode to no avail. I reset the NVRAM, which also didn’t work. Booting off the DVD let me repair permissions, which it did, and repair the hard disk (it was clean), but still didn’t allow me to boot into OS X or even single user mode. I was also able to remove all startup items, but that didn’t work either.

The next day I followed the instructions to do an install and archive, which reinstalls OS X and imports all users and settings. This took a while, but when finished my MBP was just like it was before, except with 10.4.5. I then downloaded the 10.4.7 Combo update and installed that following these handy tips:

    - Install ONLY combo updates.
    - Quit all running apps.
    - Backup /Users before updating.
    - Repair permissions before updating.
    - Repair permissions after updating.

After all of that I’m FINALLY at 10.4.7.
