MacBook with graphics issues.

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

Unfortunately, lots of image issues. Tom Kim has posted screenshots of his MacBook with the window artifacting and other graphical surprises. Notice the obscured dock in one of the later screenshots.

Looks like bad graphics module on the motherboard, I think.

third cleverhack podcast

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

The third cleverhack podcast is now posted. This podcast features introductory music by mathgeeks and was edited with the help of audacity.

Podcast topics include site news, the Philly blogger meetup, thoughts about software user interface design, CSS boxes and a pop culture critique of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Note: To follow up with something I noted in the podcast, I apparently need to use the WordPress rich text editor to use the podPress plugin.

Saturday morning MLP

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

A few observations for a beautiful Saturday morning.

-Treat your Starbucks Barista well and you will be paid back handsomely. I probably go to the Starbucks near me at least once a week (often enough to notice when a longtime barista has added highlights to her hair), mostly on the way to work in the morning. I’ve gotten into the habit of being polite and tipping the loose change I get from a Triple Grande Vanilla Latte. Every so often, I get an upgrade of an extra shot or a larger size. Or, even better, getting my drink faster than the lady in front of me who was whining about her Venti Soy No-whip Caramel Macchiatto.

-I’m now Skype capable thanks to people I know who are using it. The only reason why I’m using it is because it’s free, because I’ve been unimpressed with the user interface (at least on the Mac OS X client). I also procured the Logitech USB Headset 250 to use with Skype which was ok, but I will most likely upgrade to something else of better quality.

-I thought that this guy had a very insightful comment in the Slashdot thread discussing why Microsoft can’t make an iPod killer.

-New RSS reader in my logs: Great News 1.0.

-I’m amused that my most highly trafficked blog tags have something to do with Death Cab for Cutie. If I tag for them, invariably I see visitors from the Seattle area.

Ok kids, that’s about enough for now. Today I’m going to be immersed in some hot Philly area blog culture action. I’ll tell you about it later. ;-)

Quick Apple Related Update

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

1) I was linked to by over the weekend. Now, I’ve been both slashdotted and instapundited a few times, but let me tell you that macsurfer can throw comparable traffic.

2) At least half of my readers are using a Mac, but I had not seen the following user agent until this weekend. I can’t think of any of my regular readers who would have such a setup.
Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv: Gecko/20060508 Firefox/ Mac OS X [Tiger PPC]

3) “There were tears, there was laughter, there was my G5.” How sweet. ;-)

Update: I’m trying to get the Mighty Seek Podpress plugin working- as you can see the flash podplayer doesn’t work. But the old school direct link to the mp3 file does. It’s something with the .htaccess file apparently and I’m a tad bit frustrated that the install docs failed to mention this.

Update 2: The flash player is working now. The whole mention of the .htaccess in the install FAQ led me on a snipe hunt, but all is well now and the only part of the plugin that doesn’t work is the stats, and at this point, they aren’t really that important.  Also, the flash player has a bug in which it requires the mp3 file to be encoded at 11.025 kHz, 22.050 kHz or 44.100 kHz.

Panic! At the MacBook Pro!

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

(There’s a musical reference in that title…)

Since I’ve been writing about Apple products so much, I might as well give you the not so hot news. Or in this case let you know that I don’t allow MacBook Pros on my couch as they get *hot*.

While a few of my readers are happy MacBook Pro owners, one particular MacBook Pro I know of has been experiencing kernel panics at the rate of one or two a day. At first the thought was that perhaps running Parallels with Windows XP was causing the kernel panics, but then they started occurring when the MacBook Pro was in normal use… which is worrying at best.

Anyway, the MacBook Pro kernel panic log messages seem to reference the APIC controller and in my A+ Certified experience seems to mean that there’s something hardware related.

Has anyone else seen anything similar?

Update: There’s a log of the most recent panic contained in the full post.

Update 2 06/07/2006: At this time, it seems like the panics were caused by bad third party RAM.

dear popular news provider

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

If you’re going to provide video on the Web, would it be a problem to provide a text summary or transcript of your video offerings? Some unnamed news providers offer video, however, one in particular features video only stories so the content is then trapped.
While I like the Web, and I like video on the Web, sometimes I just don’t want to click on video.

MacBook Pro Love

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

We’ve just been full of Apple articles lately, so how about some shots of a MacBook Pro lovingly unpacked and booted up for the very first time.

The one thing I noticed is that the box is about half the size of the box that came with my PowerBook.

Nike+iPod, cool but…

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

I’ve asked a triathlete about the new Nike+iPod Sport Kit and the response was that the idea was cool but why couldn’t there be a New Balance kit?

Don’t know if it will really work, but I figured might as well try since I have a phone with a keyboard now.
