some personal vindication

Posted by joy

From The NY Times Invest in the stock market, but sleep at home.

Article exploring the “radical” concept that owning your own home isn’t the great investment as some think it is. However shocking this revelation is, I actually first read about the idea in Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

That article misses some huge points. Real estate rarely loses value, and when it does, it almost never loses more than a few percent. So while bigger returns are possible in the market, an investor faces the prospect of losing huge amounts in a black-tuesday like fall. By their argument, stocks are safer than bonds because over the long haul bonds have earned less. It confuses average return with volatility.
