In the US, we've witnessed individual states legislating AI, which in practice produces a sometimes contradictory web of laws that AI orgs must navigate:

⚖️ US States️ – 44 State Attorney Generals write warning letter to 13 major AI companies about chatbots exposing kids to sexualized content and conversations - August 2025

🏛️ California – Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (TFAIA) (SB 53) - Imposes reporting and auditing requirements on large developers of foundation artificial intelligence (AI) models (“foundation models’), requires the Government Operations Agency (GovOps) to develop a framework for a public cloud computing cluster, and enacts whistleblower protections related to activities of large developers. Introduced January 2025; Status: IN PROGRESS, passed both legislative houses, awaiting Governor Newsom's signature

🏛️ California – California Artificial Intelligence Transparency Act (SB 942) - Signed into law September 19, 2024; takes effect January 1, 2026

🏔️ Colorado - Colorado AI Act - Enacted in 2025; effective February 1, 2026
